Vasectomy
Vasectomy is a method of male contraception that many couples consider, having completed their families.
The procedure can be performed under local or general anaesthetic and involves two small incisions at the
top of the scrotum to tie off the vas on each side (the small tube that carries sperm from the testicle.)
There may be some minor discomfort or bruising for a few days, but generally recovery is rapid.
Your surgeon will be able to discuss all aspects of vasectomy with you. In particular you will be made aware
that vasectomy is considered a permanent method of contraception and that surgery to reverse a vasectomy at a
later date is often unsuccessful. In addition, while vasectomy is one of the most effective forms of contraception,
there is a very small failure rate, where men can remain fertile or even regain fertility at a later date.
Following vasectomy, it is important for couples to continue to use other forms of contraception until two sperm samples
have been reported as sterile by the laboratory.
You will be given full instructions regarding vasectomy at your consultation.
