Ingrowing toenail
The inner or outer edge of the big toenail may grow into the surrounding skin causing a painful lump which may get repeatedly infected.
This commonly affects teenagers and young adults, although it can occur at any age. Prevention usually involves cutting the toenail straight
across and wearing wide shoes. However, when the condition is advanced, it is often necessary to remove the edge of the toenail to allow a
new straight edge to form which will not irritate the skin. This day-case procedure is performed under local anaesthetic (or under general
anaesthetic in children). The treated area will then require daily dressing until healed, which takes about 14 days.
About 5-10% of treated ingrowing toenails will recur, requiring the procedure to be repeated.
All the surgeons at Warwickshire Surgical Partners have extensive experience in treating ingrowing toenails and will be able to advise
you on the best course of action.
