Paediatric Hernia
Some babies are born with a persistent connection between the abdomen and the groin. This is much commoner in boys and commoner
on the right side, but can also occur in girls. This persistent connection can allow a loop of bowel from the abdomen to push down
into the groin, particularly when straining or crying, and this will be noticed as a lump in the groin area. Often the lump is
noticed in the first few weeks of life, but sometimes may only become obvious in later years when the child is more active.
If a hernia is confirmed on examination by one of the general paediatric surgeons at Warwickshire Surgical Partners,
then surgical correction will usually be recommended to prevent the small but important risk of a loop of bowel becoming
stuck in the hernia. Surgical correction is performed as a small day-case procedure under general anaesthetic, where the
persistent connection is tied off in the groin through a small incision. Your surgeon will be able to give you full details of
this procedure at consultation.
