Varicose Veins
These are enlarged, lumpy veins under the skin in which the small valves which
keep blood flowing up the leg don’t work properly. As well as being unsightly,
varicose veins can be uncomfortable, causing aching or heaviness of the legs,
itching of the skin or swelling. Occasionally varicose veins can lead to more
serious problems such as phlebitis (painful inflammation), skin discolouration,
eczema and ulceration.
Varicose veins can be treated in a number of ways. Conventional surgery involves an
operation to tie off the vein at the main junctions in the groin or behind the knee,
and then removing the lumpy veins through tiny incisions. Foam sclerotherapy is an
injection treatment that shrivels up the varicose vein and its branches.
Endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) is a technique where a catheter is passed up the varicose vein,
and then the energy from the laser is used to shrivel up the vein.
Everyones varicose veins are different. Consultants at the Warwickshire Vein Clinic have expertise
in all three techniques outlined above, and will be able to advise you on the most suitable treatment for your legs.
