Gallstones
Gallstones occur in a small bag under the liver called the gallbladder. They are very common in the UK and most are
probably related to eating a western diet. When a meal containing fat is eaten, the gallbladder contracts, and this can
be painful if the gallbladder contains stones. Occasionally the gallbladder containing stones can become inflamed requiring
antibiotics, or the gallstones can pass out of the gallbladder causing pain or jaundice.
Gallstones can be detected in the gallbladder using an ultrasound scan. If you have pain due to gallstones,
then it is usually advisable to have the gallbladder containing all the stones removed. This can be done in most
cases using key-hole surgery. The operation is called laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is performed under a general
anaesthetic through small incisions in the abdomen (more information).
Two of the surgeons in Warwickshire Surgical Partners (Mr Blacklay and Mr Imray) are experts in surgery for gallstones,
and will able to advise you on all aspects of treatment.
