An aneurysm occurs in an artery when the wall becomes weak and begins to widen out. This can occur in any artery, but the majority are in the aorta (the large artery in the abdomen), behind the knee or in the groin. For most of the time, aneurysms do not cause any problems – most patients are unaware they have them. However large aneurysms can cause problems such as leaking blood into the abdomen, or blocking the blood supply to the legs. Both of these situations require emergency surgery.

About 10% of men aged 60 will have an aneurysm of some sort. They are less common in women. Aneurysms are more common in people who have had a first-degree relative with one. They are usually detected using an ultrasound scan, and if small can be kept under observation with repeated ultrasound scans over months or years.
